Z is for Zoology

Animals. I love them! Who doesn't?

Zoology is the branch of science to the animal kingdom, including structure, embryology, evolution, classifications, habits, and distribution of all animals, both living and extinct. Zoologists are biologists who increase scientific knowledge not only for their branch of science, but for the general public too.

What is zoology good for? I'm close to the San Diego Zoo (home to over 3,700 animals and 360 species and sub-species. It's also one of the few zoos that house giant pandas. The San Diego Zoo partners with the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, an 1,800 acre free range park housing 2,600 animals, 3,500 species and 350 plant species.

We have season tickets to both parks. They are great at educating the public regarding the current state of these magnificant animals shrinking habitat. If it wasn't for parks like these, many species would go extinct during out life time. They breed endangered species in hopes to bring their numbers back up.

However, it is becoming evident many species and sub species will only survive in parks like these. Left alone in the wild, they would be poached out of existance.

So my last word to you from this A to Z Challenge is to take a moment to appreciate God's greatness and creativity when it comes to animals. Soon, many will only exists in zoos and their related parks. Make it a point to take the family to a zoo this summer. You'll be glad that you did. Zoos are on the cutting edge of some truly amazing programs to help our furry friends thrive on this dangerous planet.

Question: My favorite animal is the giraffe. What's yours?

  4. Love giraffes! My local zoo lets you feed sweet potato slices to them. We're planning a trip to the zoo this summer. It'll be my son's first time(he's two) and I am so excited to get to experience it through his eyes.

  5. What a beautiful thought to end the Challenge with. The animals kingdom is definitely something to appreciate and in fact I am in awe of it. The poaching is tragic. I can't even pick a favorite animal - I basically love them all. :)

    Congrats on another great Challenge!

  7. Sad that's the only place they will exist, but better than extinct.
Congratulations on completing the Challenge! We rocked it this year.

  8. I don't think I could pick a favorite. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo we visited last summer had lots of giraffes. They were very friendly and you could feed them lettuce. I've enjoyed your posts again this year.

  9. It's really sad that some animals can only survive in captivity, and not in the wild like they're supposed to be.
Congrats on making it through the challenge, I've learnt a lot from your posts! :)

  10. I believe Toronto has a fantastic zoo. Never been as I can't do that much walking. However, we are lucky we have The African Lion Safari quite close to us, Matt even did security for them for a while. We have been many times and can, of course, drive round to see the animals. They have a particularly good elephant breeding programme there.

  11. Great post. I's very sad that we don't have a better handle on poachers. Maybe if there were poachers who poached poachers...

There's a game preserve near me. (Similar to a zoo. Actually, they recently renamed to Lehigh Valley Zoo, but everyone still uses the old name!) There's also the drive-thru wild safari at Six Flags in Jersey. Nothing like a monkey sitting on your hood. Yup, that's an original hood ornament. LOL.

Stopping by from the #atozchallenge !

  13. Great Finale: Zoo, San Diego and the Wild Animal Park were my favorite places when I lived there-apart from Shelter Island and its marinas, of course. Now, I shall go back and read through all these wonderful blogs.

  15. Spock said to hunt a species into extinction was illogical. I thing a better word would be shameful.

I'm a big fan of deer. Not your classic zoo resident but I think they're beautiful.

  16. Thanks for the challenge. I'm continuing to blog a-z in May. Not much of animal lover, though our zoo here in Columbus Ohio with The Jack Hanna is quite an awesome place. We go once every couple of years. Think my favorite to watch would be the Polar Bears when their in the water swimming.

  19. Hi Stephen .. we are sadly killing everything off .. or by destruction of their habitat not allowing them to breed or live in peace ... it will change the earth ....

However my favourite is the Warthog ... I love his little tail .. and I have wildlife paintings, photos, art work around the flat ... and a few warthogs! Cheers and congratulations on finishing ... Hilary
