P is for Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (Designer Babies)

Designer Babies: Okay, I needed to squeeze this issue somewhere on the A to Z Challenge. There is a ethical and moral debate regarding Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis to screen embryos for genetic defects. Follow this through, and designer babies are not far off on the horizon.

This is a topic that is a mini-series just waiting to happen. And it will. So I will leave this very entertaining video clip for you to view. With great power comes great responsibility. Will we as a race properly steward our ever-increasing understanding of DNA?

  1. Hi Stephen .. I'm just glad I don't have to think about this topic - it appals me .. we mess with human life and things will be even more dangerous to our planet than they are now. Yet there has to be some merit to eliminating major debilitating diseases ... so I hope we have many wise men and women who will take care of these possibilities ... I know you'll get lots of other thoughtful comments here ..

    All the best Hilary

  5. I'm sure it will happen in the future. Probably not mine though. When it does, for the longest time it will probably depend on money.

  6. My Recon Marine series was all about genetic designing. I've had great feed back on it and even as I wrote it, the ethical and moral implications became a big part of the story.

  7. This definitely sees where the trend is leading, and how close this all is to becoming reality. Scary stuff. Most of us would have been deemed "defective" in some way.

  8. Quite a frightening thought, really! Imagine custom-designing a baby so to speak! Come to your blog thanks to the A to Z Challenge.

  10. Wow. This is a lot to think about, but I feel sure, unfortunately, going by our past and how "well" we "police" or "regulate" ourselves as a society, that we will abuse this and mess ourselves up big time. If we were good at it, we wouldn't have to worry about the health of our planet. We don't live long enough to feel the consequences of our actions. Great post, thank you.
