2020 May IWSG

Hello everyone and as always thanks for stopping by. These are the co-hosts for February 2020’s Insecure Writers Support Group brought to you by Alex J. Cavanaugh and his team of co-hosts:

Be sure to stop by and show them some love!

May 6 question - Do you have any rituals that you use when you need help getting into the ZONE? Care to share?

Well, I rarely have these moments. I can usually write about anything. That’s not to say I don’t have writers’ block. But I rarely have a problem with that. I think a lot of writers and editors and musicians can relate we’re not necessarily extroverts.

That being said, I’ve adapted to be “In The Zone” at any given time. Often I cannot pick and choose my spots. I need to look for opportunities to write even if it’s a series of 15 - 60 blocks of writing time. At the end of the week I’ll add up the time I spent researching and writing and only then will it become recognizable that I accomplished something significant.

Question Do you look at what you are currently writing to feel good that you accomplished something or do you look at the overall picture to feel you reached a milestone?

  1. Good point. You have to look at the whole week, not just one small day.

  2. The moments are rare for me because I so seldom have a block of uninterrupted time to do anything, much less write. But when I get it, it's golden.

  3. All I get are small chunks of time so I take them when they happen.

  4. Oftentimes the overall picture does more for me than a singular job. Small chunks are better than none! :)

  5. I do small chunks here and there. Even those little bits help me push forward.

  6. Hi, Stephen! I look at my overall picture for the feeling of accomplishment. A recent one, like being published in this year's anthology, gives me the big thrill and motivation to keep going. I'm a writing chunked, unless I'm in the middle of a binge. All the best to you!

  7. I've definitely been in that place where every moment counts. You don't need an excuse to write, just write when you can at any time, any day.

And while I try to enjoy small victories, it's hard not to get caught up in chasing the big picture.

  8. I need to take advantage of those small bits of time to write too.

  9. I keep track of words written each day. Sad to say, I have a lot of blank days lately. Looking at the bigger picture is something I should try. Stay safe.
