R is for Running in Slow Motion in Dreams

I remember as a kid I had these dreams. I was chased by kids bigger and badder than me. Try as I might, I could not run faster than running in slow motion. It was very similar to a lucid dream (scroll back to L is for Lucid Dream) where I was awake in my dream. 

The major difference was that I could not make a conscious effort to run faster and escape. Maybe this falls in the category of a nightmare; awake in the middle of a dream with imminent danger but not having the ability to change anything. 

One general consensus here is anxiety. Your legs push you forward throughout your life and there is resistance to your progress. You are in a situation where an intrusive force is disrupting your otherwise peaceful world, sometimes even mocking you, and you have no control over it. At least at the moment. Life changes often for the better. You just have to go through trials and tribulations and learn how to overcome.

  1. I had a dream the other night where I was being attacked by a zombie, but she wouldn't die in the way a zombie should, even though I knew I was doing it right. I think that was all about anxiety - I was worrying about the couple of posts I hadn't finished yet. Rather extreme for such a small worry, but my brain is an odd place sometimes :)

    1. Natasaha, these dreams do raise the anxiety level big time. And don;t seat the last few posts. Keep them short and simple. Or copy and paste something from last year's Challenge.

  3. Interestingly, I have had a lot of running dreams--of running marathons (something that makes my knees hurt to even consider). But I don't ever remember not able to run very fast.

  5. I have a question I've never been able to answer. Do you run faster because you are afraid or do you become more afraid because you are running faster?

    1. Gail. it's definitely the latter for me. These were dreams when I was a kid but I was always chased by a much bigger kid who wanted nothing more than to kick my @$$.

  9. Seems like I should have had this, but can't remember it. My bad dreams involve being overpowered by an evil being that wants to smother me. Forcing myself to breath deeply, saves me. I think it might be that I actually stop breathing sometimes. Quite terrifying when it used to happen, now I just take some deep breaths and it's over.

  10. I remember having dreams where I want to cross the street and I'm just going so slow crossing it yet I can see a car heading my way. Would this be the same?

  11. That dream drives me crazy. I also have a variation on it in which I know I am asleep but I want to wake up and it won't let me (the dream." I think you are correct about the anxiety.

  13. I really hate these dreams, I never get anywhere, and the bad guys are right there or ahead of me. LOL The worst dreams ever. I usually get caught and wake up before or just as they're killing me. :)

  14. Oh I hate when I have these dreams. It's feels frustrating and I am full of fear and anxiety because I am usually being chased or I am trying to get so where fast.

  16. I think it's because our bodies are so relaxed and we're not supposed to be moving. We're trying to make ourselves run, and our bodies are saying, "Hey, lie still." lol

  19. The running in slow motion feeling also reminds me of the falling but never reaching the bottom feeling...you wake up in 'mid-air'...not a nice experience.
