N is for Nightmares, Night Terrors and Naked in Public (One out of three ain't so bad)

Loved the Monsters Inc Movies. Hope There's a Third!
Nightmares We’ve all had them. They are vividly distinct and disturbing dreams. Sure, nightmares are more common among children. However, one out of every two adults has nightmares on occasion and between 2% and 8% of the adult population are plagued by nightmares.

Nightmares may have terrifying man-eating monsters chasing you, or you cannot outrun or escape danger. You could be about falling from a great height (see F is for Falling).

Although nightmares and night terrors both cause people to awake in great fear, they are very much different in nature.

Night Terrors These dreams generally occur in children during the first few hours after falling asleep. They are experienced as feelings, not dreams, so they don’t recall why they are terrified when they wake up. Yeah, that is scary, waking up being scared, and not knowing why. Reference

Naked in Public Okay, you might think this dream is certainly a nightmare. However, many experts and mystics claim being partially or completely naked in public, especially around people you know, is a sign of confidence. You are compromised and exposed. Yet no matter how dire or humiliating the situation may be, you are an overcomer and there is absolutely no one or nothing that can stop you in whatever challenge comes your way. You are a super conqueror!

So the next time you are naked in your dreams, give yourself a fist pump and a loud shouting Whoo-hoo! Then tell the person next to you the what and why you are doing that!

  1. Never been naked in a dream, but had to go to the bathroom a lot in dreams and couldn't find them; I figured it was my body's way of saying "wake up and take care of business."

    Orange sounds interesting

  2. Oh...I have nightmares and I have had night terrors. I have woken up in a sweat, pulse racing and fear gripping me but not sure why. I have had many nightmares. One I had just last week was of me being held captive and I couldn't escape my area. The creepy guy had a bunch of minions working form him and doing his bidding. This boss was creepy Loki g and I knew he wanted sex when it pleased him. I finally said it was enough and left. I was walking on the side of the road and knew it was where I had grown up. I saw my dog walking beside one the creep's minions and I knew I had to get my dog. I went back and demanded my dog. The creep laughed at me and told me he will keep me or others will join my dog's fate. I went to a nearby ditch. A man was laughing and holding a rifle. I found a bag and inside the bag were the 4 paws of my dog. I woke up then. It was not a nice dream

  3. Never been naked in public. Phew! That would be terrifying.
But nightmares. Yes. awful ones. And I always wondered why.
Don't think I have had night terrors.. That sounds really scary. Fear but not knowing why.

  6. Whew! And all this time I thought being naked in my dreams was my insecurity showing up. Thanks, Stephen.

    1. Kathleen, I touched on this in E is for Epic Dreams. It's difficult to nail down some dreams like Numinous Dreams because they can fall under numerous letters of the A to Z Challenge.

  8. Interesting that being naked would signify confidence, my first thought was vulnerable. The worst nightmare I've ever had (long ago) was of an ax falling as I attempted to hang curtains. I prefer blinds, these days;-) Can't wait to see what Orange is about!

    1. Hmmmm ... curtains could mean a stage where the show must go on and the falling ax is someone or something trying so very hard to stop you. Hopefully the ax doesn't represent you and your fear of failure.

  9. I have been naked in a dream more often than most people have been naked in real life...not sure what my subconscious is telling me :)

  10. I'm quite often in the buff in my dreams - nice to know it's positive! As for nightmares - yes, I've definitely had more in my childhood than adulthood.

  11. That's interesting Stephen, I often dream I am naked. I do get other nightmares, one or two I have managed to write down with the intention of writing but I never do. Running and getting nowhere is one awful nightmare too.

    1. Jo, this is a very common dream. And great stories do arise from dreams. See Avatar from M is for Movies.

  12. I don't think I've ever been naked in a dream. I definitely wouldn't feel confident if I was. I've certainly had nightmares but none so terrifying that I remember them now.

  13. Good information! I've done the running, the falling, and the naked. It's the one where you use the bathroom in view of the public that I want to understand. :)

  14. I remember a dream of being naked when I was a kid and I have had that dream many times as an adult. Surprising it is about confidence. When I had them, I thought it was about not being good enough, etc.
Orange has me wondering. Oh my.

  15. I've never had a naked dream. What I do have is dreams where I have socks on and the ground is wet and I'm trying not to get my socks wet.

  16. One naked dream i remember from childhood, i was at school and the Principal kept pushing me to the front of every line saying, "Naked people go first!" It was very upsetting, at least in the dream.

    1. As a kid that would be upsetting. I think I'd be on my best behavior the rest of the school year.

  17. My childhood nightmare was thinking there was a lion running around outside. My folks weren't buying it though and I had to go sleep in my own bed!
Not sure I could convince myself it was a show of confidence if someone found me roaming around in the nude. And explaining a fist-pump to your bed partner might not be so easy.

  18. I don't remember naked dreams, but a dream I've had more than once is one where I need to be somewhere nice and for some reason, I can't get it together to get changed for that occasion.

  19. Those naked dreams never made me feel confident so I don't know about that but last night I had so many other other dreams I woke up exhausted.

  22. nightmares usually involve bugs of some sort. My husband's been awakened from the dead with a shriek and there I am pointing at the ceiling. He knows I'm sleeping since my glasses aren't on - I can't see a thing and no, there's no spider in the corner. (nor naked in public either)

  24. I always pray for no nightmares. It works for me. :)

Being naked in my dreams used to baffle me, but then I'd think, well, I'm dreaming, so...whatever. lol

  25. How about the nightmares when you go to school and realize you forgot about a test? (Or, in my case, and entire class, and it's the end of the semester, and you are going to fail because you did not attend at all... and I'm a teacher. Ugh.) :D
