Dreams: F is for Falling and Flying

Falling I used to dream a lot that I was falling from ludicrous heights in all types if settings. It’s generally believed that if you fall without fear then you are going through challenging times but are not afraid and are overcoming great obstacles.

However, if you free fall and are scared $h!+!e$$ then you are anything but in control of the things you are going through. I’ve had far too many of the latter dream, but fortunately it’s been many years since I’ve had one.

Flying Flying is one of the Top Ten 10 Dreams people claim to have. To dream that you are flying signifies a sense of freedom where you had initially felt restricted and limited.

Unfortunately for me, my flying always turned into a terrifying free fall (see above Falling Dream).

Honorable Mention Farm, Farting (had to get that in) and Food.

Tomorrow G is for G.

Question Flying or falling? Do you or have you had these dreams?

  1. Mhm... I don't think I've never dreamed of falling. Maybe. Can't really remember. I've certainly never dremed of flying :-(

  2. Hi Stephen - occasionally one of these dreams comes along - and sometimes I have a panic because I don't seem to stop falling ... fortunately I do - so I can comment! I knew there was a reason!? Good words .. one I'd rather not think about ... cheers Hilary

  3. Both Falling and Flying! Terrifying and exhilarating at the same time! Best is when you actually zoom out while flying and the view is like the world map. Falling mostly wakes me up with a jolt.. Thats not much fun.

  4. Just what I was waiting for Stephen. Those two dreams... So, I am totally out of control and long for another flying dream :) When I have flying dreams, I'm generally using front crawl swimming stroke to move along quicker. Maybe that's a sign of impatience? Great post. Thank you.

    1. Nicola, maybe these dreams are a way to release what's bound up inside of us like a release valve. So maybe they are for the better, terrifying that they are.

  5. I used to have a lot of falling dreams when I was younger, but haven't had one in years. Maybe it is all to do with finding one's own equilibrium. I don't remember any flying dreams, which is sad.

  6. I've never had a falling dream and have only had one flying one that I remember. Maybe that's why I get high by being high (as in elevation)

  7. I love the flying dreams, but have far too few of them. The falling dreams make me jump, which wakes me up. :) So I tend to remember the falling ones.

  8. Gosh! I am reading all about exciting dreams and here I dream only about mundane stuff 'Ahh, lets have coffee.....drats! What, no sugar!' That's the kind of boring dreams I have :(

  9. Good to know about interrupting dreams. I have fallen in dreams, but not from great heights...at least not that I remember. Flying??? I must be a very grounded person...I don't fly in dreams or in real time...not since the early 1990's...in real time...and then it was a nightmare.

  10. I haven't fallen in dreams that I can remember. I'm usually in a car or some other type of vehicle that is going over a cliff or similar.

  11. I've had falling dreams and those will wake me up. Nothing like the heart pounding at 2 am. Whew

  12. In my most vivid falling dream I was driving across a bridge when it collapsed. As I hurtled towards the rocks below I remained calm, but thought to myself 'I hope this isn't going to hurt too much.' It's a dream I had years ago but I've never forgotten it!

  13. I'm not fond of flying, so glad I don't have many of those dreams.
When you fall, are you going ludicrous speed?

  14. I've never had a dream where I was falling. But I have had flying dreams and I usually suck at it and am trying not to hit power lines and get electrocuted.

  15. If I've fallen, it hasn't been far. I've had lots of flying dreams though. Those are wonderful.

  17. I haven't had a falling dream in a while, but my favorites are my version of flying dreams where I'm doing an amazing triple axel and I've jumped so high off the ice I'm literally at the top of the arena. It's wonderful!

  18. Gads. I had many of those 'falling' dreams as a kid. Thankfully, not for years and years now. Sometimes I dream of trying to get off a Ferris wheel as it rises "Put me down!". I don't care for glass elevators either - ha! :-)

  19. Yep, that's my most frequent dream. I just love them, and I'm so cranky when something wakes me up mid-flight.

  20. I've had falling dreams but never flying dreams. I'd feel like the Flying Nun if I had a flying dream! I used to watch that show all the time so it's surprising that I never dreamed of flying...
I've always been afraid of falling so I guess I'm still struggling and out of control. Imagine that! :)

    1. Michele, it happens to the best of us. I lean in the direction dreams like this actually help to release built up pressure we keep inside of us.

  21. I often have flying dreams. Not sure about falling dreams, don't remember any, certainly not lately. It is wonderful, the sense of flying.

  22. I've never had a flying dream, but falling yes, and it's always in a car that's going over a cliff. :)

  23. I have had both dreams but when I am falling I think of not wanting to hit the ground while I am dreaming so I conjure up a rope or something and change the dream. In flying, I actually jump really high, way above the hydro poles and can go long distances but am also scared and feel alive at the same time. Again, typical weird dream. I had a nightmare last night

  25. I have not ha dreams where I'm falling but I have had dreams where I'm running away from someone or something but it feels like I'm running in slow-motion. The faster I try to run, the slower I get, while the pursuant is getting ever closer to me! It's been a while since I had one of those though :)

  26. I've had few successful flights in my dream, and they do tend to end with me falling. I try not to be scared when it happens, but eventually, I freak out a little. Definitely symbolic of real life.

  28. The few times i've had falling or flying dreams it was for bad reasons, guess that means i felt out of control of something or another.

  29. What does it mean if you fly with purpose, but have a weird ritual or process for taking off? For example, I usually take off in a wheat field, then fly as if I'm swimming breast stroke. I've flown up and down grocery aisles and roads and who knows what else. The falling is usually related to a hypnogogic jerk - not really "falling" except that my brain might fit it in and add the hallucination. But the flying - that's dreaming. And what fun.

    1. Holly. that's really deep and detailed. Not sure what that means but wheat is generally a good thing and can represent a harvest.

  30. I guess I have had what would be considered a flying dream. More like swimming through the air, though.
